Admit it, as Malaysians, we’re always astonished when non-locals, especially Ang Mo could speak Bahasa Melayu (BM). While the pronunciation may not be entirely accurate or the fact that their vocabularies are limited, watching them attempt to speak the national language is always delightful, making us feel proud that others are speaking our language.

Some time ago, actor Chris Hemsworth (Thor) demonstrated in several interviews his capacity to speak limited Bahasa Indonesia which left not only the interviewers with their jaws dropped, but also his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) co-star alike. Okay, while Bahasa Indonesia isn’t BM, both languages still share a mutual intelligibility that enable speakers to understand one another’s language without prior familiarity or special effort.

Check out this video compilation of Chris Hemsworth speaking Bahasa Indonesia:

Several days ago, an Instagram video featuring actor Grant Gustin, known for playing Barry Allen in the CW’s The Flash TV show attempting to speak BM has gained the attention of many Malaysian fans. In 2018, the American actor married Andrea Thoma, who is a Sabahan girl. Typically, it’s common in mixed marriage for both partners to assimilate each other’s culture, language included. So, sure confirm Gustin is bound to pick up some BM vocabularies along their relationship lah!

In the video posted by Thoma, she was seen playfully messing with Gustin in which the latter responded to her by saying ‘jangan kacau’ (translated as ‘don’t mess around’). The lovely couple continued to cheekily teased one another with Gustin repetitively saying the same phrase several times. Laughter can be heard between them as Thoma guided him to the correct pronunciation of the phrase. It appears that Gustin is still learning to accurately pronounce ‘jangan kacau’! It’s cool, Flash. With your beloved wife as your guide, it’s only a matter of time till you could speak good BM!

Speaking about the Flash, CW just recently aired the final parts of their annual DC TV Universe crossover, featuring an ensemble cast from several DC COMICS shows like Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman. The theme of this latest superhero crossover involves dealing with a crisis across the multiverse. In one episode, Gustin’s Flash crossed path with another character from another universe that probably gave audiences one of the best surprises in TV show history.

This character was none other than the Flash himself, except this is the version from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) who appeared in the Justice League (2017) movie, played by Ezra Miller. It was an unexpected cameo appearance that no one would’ve thought about happening in a million years. This marks the first time in TV history that characters from both DC COMICS’ TV show and the DCEU had a crossover. Fans were in disbelief of what they’re seeing while feeling amused at the same time to see both Flashes interacted with one another in a brief but humorous scene.

In this scene, TV show Flash (played by Gustin) entered the Speed Force only to unexpectedly encounter the DCEU Flash (played by Miller), an alternate version of himself. Both Flashes were surprised and bewildered to see one another. For a moment, they proceeded to admire each other’s costumes right before an awkward self-introduction, realizing they both also share the same name, Barry Allen (Martha, anyone?). It wasn’t long until DCEU Flash had begun to vanish into thin air, leaving TV show Flash alone puzzling about the meaning of this unusual encounter. Watch the video here:

The same day after the episode aired, Gustin posted on Instagram some behind-the-scene photos of both him and Miller in their respective Flash costumes, quoting “How about that? Ezra is one of a kind. So glad we could make this happen and keep it a secret until today. Thank you to @dccomics.”

It’s uncertain if the appearance of Miller’s Flash is considered canon (a term used to coin if an event actually happened in a film or TV show) or merely a one-off stunt that the show producers thought would be fun to include, we’ll have to wait and find out if this unusual event would be further explored in the DCEU Flash movie that is planned to be released in 2022.

Regardless, Ezra Miller’s cameo appearance is truly a delightful surprise for all DC COMICS fans out there. Fingers crossed we get to see a similar act being pulled off by MARVEL since we’ve already gotten several iterations of Spider-Man within the last two decades! Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting contents from Rilex-Lah!
