Most Anticipated Movies to Catch in 2020

In less than two weeks, we would be bidding farewell to the 2010s as we move forward into a new decade. A new beningging beginning is always fill with excitements. For some, this could be an opportunity to start over and set new goals. Maybe the promotion you yearned for a long time is due… Or perhaps the chance to finally fulfil your bucket list of travelling somewhere… Or even welcoming the newest addition to your family. So much excitements! Regardless, there is always something to anticipate for in every new beginning.

At Rilex-lah, we too are excited for a whole lot of new stuff. One of them is most definitely the upcoming movies that are scheduled for release in 2020. Here are some of the most anticipated movies of 2020 we can expect to hit cinemas within the next 12 months:

 

1. DOLITTLE

What’s better than watching a movie about someone who has the ability to speak to animals? Watching that someone being Iron Man. That’s right! In the first quarter of 2020, Robert Downey Jr returns to play the titular character after delivering his brilliant performance in Avengers: Endgame. This time, he plays an English doctor and veterinarian on the quest of finding a cure for an ill Queen Victoria. Watch as he journeys into a mythical island as he crosses paths with old foes and creatures that he could speak to. Featuring an ensemble casts of actors and voice talents alike, including Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland and more, DOLITTLE opens in cinemas on 23rd January 2020.

2. A QUIET PLACE: PART II

Horror/thriller fans rejoice as director John Krasinski returns to direct the sequel of A Quiet Place. For those of you who have never heard before, the movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world where ferocious extra-terrestrial creatures inhabit. These creatures have sensitive hearing which forces a group of survivors to be extremely cautious to not make any sound that could prove fatal.

A QUIET PLACE: PART II opens in cinemas on 19th March 2020. Keep your eyes peeled for a full trailer that is expected to be released on New Year’s Day. Until then, here’s a teaser of for the upcoming trailer:

3. MULAN

Following Disney’s success of several classic animated turned live-action remakes like Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Lion King (2019) and Aladdin (2019), MULAN is next in line. The live-action remake of the 1998 animated musical film tells the story of a Chinese girl, Hua Mulan who disguised herself as a man to serve in the Imperial Chinese Army on behalf of her ill father to fight against a Hun invasion. Watch Mulan being put to the test as she trains and fights to bring honour to her family. As this is a remake of the original, audiences can expect to see some changes in the plot and some characters while still retaining the essence of the animated film. Releasing in March 2020, the live-action movie features an ensemble Chinese cast like Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Gong Li, Cheng Pei-Pei and Jet Li. Mark your calendars for 26th March 2020 is the release date for Disney’s MULAN.

4. BLACK WIDOW

The Infinity Saga may have ended, but the hype for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is far from over. In case you haven’t heard of the MCU before, it’s a shared universe that revolves around a group of superheroes based on Marvel comics. It has a total of 23 films to-date, beginning from Iron Man (2008) and its latest instalment, Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).

After over a decade since her debut in Iron Man 2 (2010), Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is finally getting her own solo film. BLACK WIDOW is the 24th instalment of the MCU that serves as a prequel, telling the story of Natasha Romanoff as she goes on the run from the world’s government who intends to hunt her down after the events in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Long story short, she’s a fugitive in hiding. This movie is expected to have a more down to earth spy and espionage stuff theme. Also starring in this movie are David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Rachel Weisz (The Mummy). BLACK WIDOW hits cinemas on 30th April 2020.

5. WONDER WOMAN 1984

Following the success and highly praised solo films like Wonder Woman (2017), Aquaman (2018) and Shazam! (2019), WONDER WOMAN 1984 is the new instalment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Like the MCU, the DCEU is also a shared universe revolving around superheroes in the DC universe.

Serving as a sequel to Wonder Woman as well as the first sequel to a DCEU solo film, the stunningly gorgeous Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince, the Amazonian Princess of Themyscira. Taking place in the year 1984 long before the events of Justice League (2017), the demigoddess would come face-to-face with her nemesis, Cheetah (played by Kristen Wiig). Audience can expect to experience some epic moments from the sequel, as well as the return of Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine), the love interest of Diana who had seemingly been killed in the first film. WONDER WOMAN 1984 is expected to release on 4th June 2020.

6. GHOSTBUSTER: AFTERLIFE

When Sony’s all-female reboot of Ghostbusters (2016) failed to perform in box office, we thought that the Ghostbusters franchise is done and a sequel would most likely not see the light of day. Well, guess what? The Ghostbusters are back for another reboot, this time it serves as a direct sequel to the original Ghostbusters movies (1984, 1989).

In GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, a single mother and her two children moved to their late grandfather’s property in Summerville, Oklahoma. When the peaceful town started experiencing a series of mysterious earthquakes, the children begin to discover the root that links their family to original Ghostbusters and step in to revive the legacy of their grandfather. Starring Mckenna Grace (Terminator: Dark Fate), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man). This is also the first Ghostbusters movie in 31 years to feature the return of the original casts like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts. GHOSTBUSTER: AFTERLIFE opens in cinemas 9th July 2020.

7. THE ETERNALS

THE ETERNALS is another instalment of the MCU that takes audiences into the cosmic realm. It tells the story of a race of immortal aliens. Taking place throughout the span of 7000 years, these intergalactic beings seek to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.

Little is known about the movie at the moment, but what we do know is that it features an ensemble cast, including Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kit Harington (Game Of Thrones), Salma Hayek (Desperado), Don Lee (Train To Busan), Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and more. The movie is expected to release on 5th November 2020.

8. GODZILLA VS. KONG

Earlier this year, audiences were treated to Godzilla: King of The Monsters (2019). The mindless epic battle between the colossal GOJIRA *pronounced with the best Japanese impression* and the terrifying three-headed extra-terrestrial Hydra, Ghidorah totally blew us away.

In 2020, Godzilla would come face-to-face with the mighty Kong himself that could potentially rip the title of ‘King of the Monsters’ away. Could Godzilla hold its own against Kong? Which one of these Titans would emerge victorious? GODZILLA VS. KONG is the 4th instalment of the MONSTERVERSE that would end the debate of which Titan would hold the title of ‘King of the Monsters’.  It was initially slated to be released in March 2020 until it is pushed to 19 November 2020. In the meantime, you could always re-watch the previous MONSTERVERSE instalments *roars in GOJIRA*

Of course, these aren’t the only anticipated movies of 2020. There are still plenty that the admins are eager to catch. Unfortunately, we are unable to talk about them all without making this article too lengthy as it already is. So, as an honourable mention, here’s a quick list of the other movies that we are also excited for:
